Labour in government is delivering for the North East and Cumbria...

With a secure economy...

  • Claimant unemployment down 47% since 1997
  • Long term unemployment down by 21,000 since 1997
  • Around 223,000 families reciving Working Tax Credits or Child Tax Credits
  • Around 80,000 workers benefiting from an increased National Minimum Wage
  • Nearly 490,000 pensioners benefiting from the biggest rise in the basic state pension in a generation
  • Nearly 160,00 over 75s eligible for free TV licences
  • Nearly 520,000 pensioners benefit from winter fuel payments.

in the National Health Service...

  • 4592 more nurses, 702 more consultants, 383 more GPs and 270 more dentists in the North East region since 1997.
  • In total, there are 18,138 more people working in the NHS in the North East.
  • Nobody is waiting over 13 weeks for their first out-patient appointment (as of Nov 2007)
  • There are now 6 people waiting over 6 months for inpatient compared to over 12,000 in 1997.
  • 99.9% of suspected cancer patients seen by a specialist within 2 weeks of an urgent referral. (September 2007)
  • 99% of people seen within 4 hours at A&E compared to 94.1% in June 2003
  • 5 NHS Walk-In Centres across the region and 3 urgent care centres.
  • 23 new/replacement CT Scanners, 16 new/replacement MRI scanners since 1997.
  • Funding up from £2.5bn in 2003/4 to £3.9bn in 2007/8
  • 9 new hospitals open to patients funded either by public capital or PFI, 1 further building under construction and the £300m transformation of Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals due for completion in 2013.

in Education....

  • Funding per pupil up 46.2% (£1380 in real terms) between 97 and 2005-6.
  • In 2007-08, the North East will receive on average £3,799.74 per pupil under the Dedicated Schools Grant
  • 500 more teachers, 4583 more teaching assistants and 4217 more support staff.
  • 51830 more free nursery places taken up by 3 & 4 year olds
  • There are 148 Sure Start Children's Centres across the North East reaching over 95,000 children under 5 and their families. A further 33 Children's Centres are due to open by April 2008.
  • 149 Specialist schools across the Region.
  • 4 New Academy Schools have been built with a further 14 being built or planned.
  • The North East has received ober £1.5nm of capital funding for schools across the region.
  • Nine local councils are presently involved in the Building Schools for the Future programme to rebuild or refurbish every secondary school in the country.

with Safer Towns and Villages....

  • Neighbourhood Policing rolled out to Northumbria and Durham Police Force areas with Cleveland following by by April 2008.
  • Police budgets have been increased since 1997; Cleveland up by 58.5%, Durham up by 52.8% and Northumbria up by 34.4%.
  • Over 304 more police personnel in the North East since 2001 supported by 563 PCSOs.
  • Burglary down 67% and vehicle crime down 35%
